If you use BeSweet, you can directly get the audio out of the AVI file without using VDM and doing all that clicking, there are also other tools that do the same thing, such as AVItoWAV i believe its called.

Wouldnt you be better off, timewise and quality, using an AVISynth filter for deinterlacing?

I can see alot of work has been put into this, good work! I dont know how accurate it is tho, since i've never used DV.

I'm not much into AVIsynth, actually, I don't know it at all - that's why I stay away from these scripties.

Oh, we are always interested in new guides, but be patient!

A few comments from my side, if you don't mind :)

1. I would integrate the pictures into the guide instead of making them available via mouse click only.
2. You can use VirtualDub 1.6.10, which has DV decoding support included (type-1 and type-2), instead of VirtualDubMod.
3. The capturing part: I'd prefer to capture to type-1 - needs less space and is less error-prone.
4. Regarding the audio part, I'd prefer to install the Lame ACM codec and use Full processing in VirtualDub's audio menu. Extracting audio and remuxing later on can be avoided this way.
5. I prefer filtering through AviSynth because of the many excellent filters available. Together with AviSynth I'd use another DV codec to avoid colorspace conversions (Panasonic's DV codec decodes RGB only). But if you want to stay on the VirtualDub-only path, then I guess your approach is ok. There are many options that can be changed, though - there's no such thing as "the best method".
6. Many people will argue that you deinterlace the video; you may keep it interlaced to preserve fluidity of motion and to avoid deinterlacing artefacts. Even if kept interlaced, the video may be played on a progressive display by deinterlacing during playback. It depends on what your main purpose is, but I think the interlaced way should be mentioned at least.

This is my first guide, so I haven't got much experience in writing them.
1. The pictures will be integrated into the guide when version 1.0 comes out ;)
2. I didn't even know about VirtualDub 1.6, will definetely check it out.
3. All right.
4. I thought that the Lame ACM thingy causes quality loss - if it doesn't, then it's definetely the better way than demuxing, coding, and muxing again.
5. Well, it seems that I'm going to have to get over the "no-AviSynth" thing ;). Seems like a really useful tool.
6. OK. I'm going to mention interlaced encoding.

Personally I thought it was a good basic guide to get started, made me realize that you needed the firewire cable.
