DeCrypter: Rip in File or ISO Read Mode?

From Doom9's Guide for DVD Decrypter, he says you can rip in File or ISO mode.

What is the difference?

I want to to burn backup with DeCrypter after DVD Shrink if needed.

Then you'll have to create an .ISO image file, either with DVD Decrypter or, if used, DVD Shrink - because DVD Decrypter's burning capability is limited to only .ISO image files...

As a precautionary note, depending on what file system you are using (vFAT, NTFS) there is a maximum file size. Using vFAT it is 4 GB, NTFS is 8 GB. If you try to create an .ISO from a 4.7 GB DVD disk, you might have some trouble.

NTFS filesystem's implementation maximum size in 16TB-64KB (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp), not 8GB.

I routinely have filesizes in the 50GB size range on my NTFS volumes.

This limitation is not a problem if you're using either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink to create .ISO images under FAT32 - because both programs will automatically create split .ISO image files accompanied by an .MDS file (information to recombine the split .ISO), which can then be used for burning with DVD Decrypter...

ISO mode works fine on all drives. They dont need to use NTFS. FAT/FAT32 is just fine.

So far as DVD Decrypter is concerned, it makes chunks of just under 4GB and creates an MDS file that is then used to pull the chunks together to make 1 big logical file.

DAEMON Tools, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter all support the MDS file directly. That pretty much covers all tools you'd need to perform your backups*.

*Indirectly of course, most programs can work from the DAEMON Tools virtual drive.

I've aquired DVD Rebuilder and I encoded with that. I found out I could rip with DeCrypter in either File or ISO mode for Rebuilder, but if I used ISO, I would have to mount the drive with Daemon Tools or equivilent. I'm wasn't sure how to do that so I ripped with File. I encoded with Rebuilder and then burned with DeCrypter and it worked.

I suppose you would agree that the "Output to ISO image file" is a great function and addition to DVD-RB. Plus you get a higher quality backup using Rebuilder. Glad it worked out for you.
