Convert h.264 to AVI

Hi there!

First of all I would like to say that I have read the stickies, but unfortunately I don't understand much of them. I'm very new to this, so hopefully I can get a simple answer :)

I need to convert a h.264 video file I downloaded - into AVI or any other standard format. Is that possible? And btw, what is decoding?

I just need a Yes/No answer, and a program I acn use, that's all. Feel free to lock this topic, but please answer my question in a polite way first.

You can use AVC2AVI (find it in the x264 sticky thread).
Decoding is the process needed to "transform" a video, audio, etc... data stream into something usefull (a visible videoclip, audible soundtrack etc...).

first of all whats the video you downloaded?

than it depends on what you mean with "convert to avi"? do you mean placing the h.264 in avi without reencoding? or do you want to use for example divx or xvid for being able to play the stream on a hardware player?

if you dont want to reencode, unless you need to open the file desperately in virtualdub, its better to place the avc stream into .mp4 than in avi (and than maybe in .mkv depending on your audio format of choice), as avc-in-mp4 is by far more widely supported than avc-in-avi

you can place avc into .mp4 very easily with mp4box (yamb gui) or mp4creator

I forgot to say that my main goal was to make this file into a DVD file, so I can burn the video onto a DVD. I have a program called WinAVI that does the job, so I'll try things out now.

Do you guys know any easier ways to do this? (h.264 to DVD) :)

what input formats are supported by your dvd creation tool?

i assume .avi is one of them, you can try what sharktooth suggested and try to open the resulting .avi file in this dvd tool

however you need a h.264 decoder installed, such as FFDSHOW or NeroDigital decoders or WinAVI won't be able to decode the h.264 stream into something it can "understand".

You need to know the FPS for AVC2AVI.

Why is that info not stored in the stream? x264 knows it, why not storing it? Makes my life more stressful :devil:

Would it be possible then to not tell AVC2AVI the FPS? Currently, if not, it uses 25 :(

Use the free version of DivXtoDVD. It seems to work okay with MPEG-4 AVC "main" profile content ;)
