I have not had this problem until now. I have a Sony Vaio with a "DVD RW DW-U12A". I have used all kinds of DVD-R disc in the 2 years I have been burning, then this week it all hit the fan.
I bought 4 different kinds of DVD-R media and I'm having some problems,
FujiFilm DVD-R 8x 50pack- will not burn at all
Verbatum DVD-R 16x 50pack - will not burn at all
Sony DVD-R 8x 25pack - will burn but will not play on old DVD player
Memorex DVD-R 16x 25pack - will burn but will not play on old DVD player
I have used all these brands in the past with no problem.
I have 2 DVD players. Both sonys and both play DVD-R and DVD+R.
One is about 6 years old and the other is 2 years old.
My old player used to be able to play all my DVD-R movies, but now it will not play the movies made on the SONY and MEMOREX.
I always burn at 2x
What is the deal???
Has something changed with the new batch of discs?

It sounds like there is something wrong with your DVD burner.

How would I check that out?

Also, the discs I had before I bout these 4 new discs, still work fine like they did when I 1st bought them. So its not like the burner stopped working. Just stopped with the new discs I bought. Cuz the ones that discs I had before this problem started are all working okay (burning and playing in old player)

When I say will not burn at all....
I put the disc in Nero to burn. I select 2x like always do. Everything looks like it is doing okay. It stays at 1% for about a munite then a "burning failed" box comes on.
I bought the discs at...
FujiFilm - Best Buy
Verbatum - Best Buy
Sony - Target
Memorex - Office MAx

Ok. It sounds like you have to update your burner's firmware to use the new 8x and 16x media. The Sony burner you have is for 4x and does not have the write strategy for higher speed blank media.
I had the same problem with my HP burner. HP offered a firmware download fix. Hopefully Sony does to. You have to check the Sony web page to download it.

Do i have to update even though I'm still burining at 2x?

Yes. It does not matter that you burn only at 2x. Right now the burner does not know how to write to 8x or 16x discs.
Updating the firmware will not allow you to burn any faster. It only lets you use 8x and 16x media.
This is a very common problem. Everybody with older burners who want to use newer blank media has to update. It is easy, it is usually a program you download and run and it automatically update the burner.

I've done some searching and found some firmware updates for my drive
like this http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1518
but it llok slike these are all from 2003. It seams liek that is a long time ago.
Would a update from 2003 solve a problem with 8x and 16x discs.
Did they even have 8x and 16x discs in 2003?

I justed looked around some files I have, and I've already installed the update "2.0e" and it looks like the is the newest one I can find. Should I install it again?

If you already have 2.0e then there is no need to get it again.
That web page is unofficial firmware. Perhaps Sony has released a newer firmware on their web page.
This is the Sony computer support site:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=1,24,26,66,9,70,5
Type in your Vaio's model number and see if they have an update.
I do not have a Sony burner, so I don't have the exact web page to get the new official firmware. It is also possible that Sony abandoned this drive and does not offer any updates, but I don't know.

Do you have the latest version of Nero? An outdated version may also be the problem.
Also, you shouls try another burner software. Seems Nero is not very reliable in some cases. Try DVD Decrypter (with PgcEdit or ImgTool Classic to generate the ISO), or Record Now!

I tried using ImgTool Classic
I made an ISO and Burned with DVD Decrypter.
I used one of the Sony 8x discs.
And got the same results.
Burned okay and plays in my new player, but not in my old one.
Same results as burning with Nero.
I'm going to try to find some 4x discs that I use to buy at a local computer store, and see what happens with those.
