I bought this thing not long ago to replace my lite-on lvd2002. I loved the lite on but it only lasted for about a year and a half and the drive went bad. I do have a few complaints about the philips. I have tried to play some divx and xvids on it and sometimes it wont play the video properly. I go back a day later and then it plays fine. I think that is odd.
My main issue is that this thing will play subtitles on any dvd movie that I buy or rent even though I select no subtitles. This is annoying. I read about some firmware but can't seem to find any. Does anyone have a working link or solution? If not look for this player on ebay..
THANKS.

Do some movies have subtitles turned on by default? There's something in the player setup menu about subtitles, whatever it does.
Anyway, your remote control has a subtitle button. If you want to switch subtitles on or off, push this button.

I wish it were that simple. Subtitles are always on even if on the player they are switched to off. It's really weird. The thing is I make backups of every movie I own and usually put two movies on a single disc without all of the extra stuff thats on the original disc. I have this DVP-642 and also a Philips DVDR-75. Only the DVP-642 plays the subtitles. There must be a bug in it.

Hi!
I apologize before posting this reply because I could be writing nosense.
I had the same problem with my DVD player and the root of the problem was the TV. Somebody had turned on Close Caption feature in the TV and that function was showing subtitles everytime. Why don't you see your TV Close Caption settings?

Hi!
For the Philipis DVP642:
1) Turn it on
2) Press "System menu" button
3) Select "Video"
4) Set "Closed Caption" to "Off"
