desperate with dropped frames

:confused: I'm at a loss, I have read all posts concerning dropped frames shut down all processes using "enditall" and still get dropped frames with WINDV. I have a 2.8 g processor with 512 meg ram. Using firewire with Panasonic PV-GS9. Freshly formatted with no other software. XP Pro with SP1.
I know it can work fine on my machine as it worked prior to format (virus)
I've tried to seperate drive as well...no joy
any suggestions would be great

also...I can view the video fine in preview window if cam is playing prior to capture but gets all choppy when select capture

My suggestion/guess would be:
Add sp2 & updates so you get latest MS video on your PC. Make sure codecs were installed in correct order, that maybe one codec or filter isn't being used instead of the one you want. I'd also go through firewire drivers, especially if you let Windows install them rather then doing separate installation.

SP2 is a stretch as I'm on dialup...guess I can order the CD
as far as codecs, I wasn't aware they were used for capture

Re-reading your 1st post, the part about processes. Might try leaving them alone. WinXp can unexpectedly call on stuff that seems totally unrelated. Are the services set as before? Might look here http://www.blackviper.com/index.html . WinXP treats firewire ports as network connections -- did you add anti-virus software or change security or network settings?

RE: firewire drivers...
I've seen prob. with the way winXP installs more generic firewire drivers versus the driver setup you get from the manufacturer, & I've also seen winXP setup somehow botch the job, where removing & manual install worked, though it can be a pain -- with a firewire card I've read of folks having luck putting it in another slot and installing manually.

RE: Codecs...
Not always the codecs themselves, but often software installs codecs along with other video-related DX filters/files. Unfortunately winXP doesn't provide a good way of setting what gets priority. If when re-installing everything say video apps weren't installed in same order, the latest to be installed might be set for the default. This might not be what you were using successfully before. If you didn't re-install something video related, it might have had an effect. EIther way, the goal would be duplicating the setup you had before formating.

Not every fix is always documented, and with latest versions of everything, in my experience chances of file or version conflict goes down.
