If you wonder which version of theora performes well on x86, have a look at this mail (http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/theora-dev/2005-July/002820.html) on theora-dev mailing list.
theora-mmx branch
little bit faster than
theora-liboil branch with hardcoded MMXEXT flag
followed by normal
theora-liboil branch
and finally the
unoptimized TRUNK

thx for the link!

i now also made a speed comparison, but testing the available decoders with the following results on a ~7000frames encode done with libtheora alpha 4 with qualitylevel 6 and a keyframedistance of 250 (~770kbps):

libtheora alpha4 mmx: 71fps
derf's decoder (june): 81fps
libavcodec's decoder (august): 86.7fps

i tested this in mplayer via the -benchmark option

i am using a pentium3 866mhz
