Avid specification show that they use nvidia workstation graphics cards for their video in GL.

SO consumer cards like the ATI 9800pro wont work???

As far as I know can use Xpress NLE software on most equipment. If you are talking about replacing card in Avid workstation, you'd probably want to use similar hi-end workstation card rather then anything consumer grade.

Avid Xpress usually works on every recent graphics card (i.e. it works fine with my ATI Radeon 9600 XT).

I don't think Avid XPress has any sophisticated hardware acceleration capabilities (that's why it's called XPress and not Nitrous or Adrenaline). It's made to work with every PC (although Avid is known for quite some hardware imcompatibilities... you'll always have to try...)

ATIs will work on Avids - just that you'll have to render some of the effects which won't require rendering when using nvidia cards

just that you'll have to render some of the effects which won't require rendering when using nvidia cards Do you mean that every fairly new nvidia card offers HW acceleration for Avid XPress? Or just some choice, expensive pro cards from nvidia?

well the quadro fx cards are the only tested cards to be 100% complaint with Avid, but other nvidia cards work just fine. i have an el-cheapo hand-me-down nvidia card and it works just fine.
