Dimensions differ in NeroDigital

I notice that I never get a consistant number when I look at the dimensions of movies that were originally DVD movies converted to *.mp4 files. I know that I have autocropping on, and I am sure that is the problem. The movies look fine themselves when I play them, its just that I dont really know what the standard dimensions are... Could anyone elaborate on that?

Nothing is wrong with the cropping I suppose now that I think of it. Let me rephrase the question. What exactly are the standard resolutions for 4:3 and 19:9 aspect ratios of DVD NTSC?

and a second question. I hear 720p 1080p, is that referring to the width or the height?

there are no standard resolutions and there is also no need for them when doing "mpeg-4 backups"

NTSC DVD is 720x480. When you do a backup, Nero determines a proper resolution to match your bitrate.

720x480 for DVD NTSC standard, but as bond mentioned, there are no standard resolutions for MPEG4-backup. I'm not sure whether the cropped (non-standard size) of Nero MPEG4 videos are playable with Nero certified hardware player as I don't have one of the player. :p

The crop is to save more bitrate for better video quality as "black (blank) area" are found at top and bottom area in most DVD movies, especially 16:9 NTSC DVD.

You refers to HD-TV standards? I think for HD videos '720p' is 720 in height, progressive video ('i' refers to interlaced). Similar for 1080p.

The automatic cropping and re-sizing feature in Recode2 can catch you out at first....

It sometimes has a tendency to re-set itself back to auto, even after you've manually adjusted things to your own requirements :scared: But all-in-all I think it does work remarkably well...

As the guys here have already mentioned, an NTSC DVD source contains 720x480 pixels.... And for your info, a PAL DVD source contains 720x576 pixels.... But just in-case you did not know, the images on all DVD are affected by "Aspect Ratio Signalling", which manipulates the shape (X-Y ratio) of the pixels, so the image looks the correct shape on your PC or TV screen!
