Is it safe to assume (after reading the posts) I should switch from ND to x264 MeGUI once my new X2 comes? Until the new ATEM is out, Dual core is of no benefit - right??

Until the new ATEM is out, Dual core is of no benefit - right??If you mean the high profile encoder currently in beta test, then yes. Currently available Recode releases are not SMP optimized, whereas x264 is.
although, it's not like throwing two cores at video encoding isn't going to gain you anything, but the gains are most apparent if the application is smp optimized.

Too right! The new SMP support in x264 increased my encoding by 50%. BIG improvement for me.

if it's multi-thread, technologically the speed should increase over 80%...

Meteor, don't forget that Avisynth, which isn't (aside from current CVS) SMP optimized, sucks up a lot of CPU, and also that multithreading gives wildly different gains depending on how much needs to be synchronized, and even the architecture it's executing on. There's no magic number like that.

i got speedups up to 80% with the x2 4800+ (2 threads).
the average speedup is about 60% with simple avisynth script and very light filtering [removegrain(mode=2)].
so the "magical numbers" are true, at least for me...

It probably also depends on how long the clip is. So far, I've just been trying it on short clips (openings or closings of anime episodes for example). I need to try it on a full length movie.
