I agree PgcEdit is the way to go.
There is also MenuEdit, which was good in its day, but I find that PgcEdit is now much better. For instance, you can copy and paste commands in PgcEdit. You could also do groups all at once, in MenuEdit you have to do groups one by one. The trace feature is nice so you can click on a menu button and see where it points to with a highlight. Another good feature is that PgcEdit prompts you to make a backup of the menu file.

Dont all shout at once but i tried Pgcedit in the past (dim and distance :) ) and to a novice found it slow to get going... has that now changed with newer version are there good guides??
I will try it but am struggling to find time to learn something new, so help will be appreciated

There are more PgcEdit guides being added all the time... If you have a project in mind, something in particular you want to do, tell us about it.

Easy answer - DVD Remake Pro. Incredibly easy to use without any understanding of dvd structure ect... yet still as powerful as ifoedit. Its not free but VERY worth the money. You can give the demo a try
