I wasn't real sure where this question might belong, but I figure this is the right crowd to figure it out.

I recently reformatted my computer and reinstalled Windows XP. First thing in went in and installed all the things on Windows Update (including SP2). I have an nForce 2 board, so my next visit was to nvidia.com to get the nForce drivers and the drivers for my GF 6800. Then installed the free version of the DivX codec + player. This was followed by the latest Koepi XviD driver.

Here comes the problem - in ANY video file I have (.avi, whether Divx, xvid, even divx3) - the colors are all just... WRONG... almost neon of sorts. I've tried playing in BSPlayer, Windows Media Player, even Winamp, all the same result. I thought it was just contained to video files, because my desktop and games all appear normal. But just today I started up my TV card and the picture there does the same exact thing.

The really wierd thing is - if I open up an AVI file in VirtualDub, it appears perfectly normal. I can hit the 'play' button there and it plays perfectly normal.

So... any ideas on what in the world is wrong??

You may also want to go into vid card settings and make sure that color is applied to ALL and not just desktop on the color correction tab. If it is set to all, change to desktop hit apply then reset to all again and hit apply.

If you happened to use Forceware Driver 77.72, try to update your Driver.

or use older Driver, nVidia Driver is buggy recently.

I use 71.89, works fine.

this is a recent bug with GF 6800's and the new drivers i think. my 6600 works fine with the new drivers, but some of the cards here show the same problem you're getting - looks like the bad old days of EGA, except the edges are smoothed by the resizing to fullscreen.

i think there's a way to fix it without rolling back the driver, but it might be safer to just use an older driver (man, i am SO not happy with nvidia at the moment! i'm really hoping my 6600GT will die within warranty so i can change it for something with a decent TV-out, and drivers that support PAL).

Try this -

Remove Xvid
Remove all Divx Components

Install the latest DirectX 9.0c (there is an Aug 05 version out there)

Downgrade one revision of the Nvidia drivers

Install Keopi's XVID - the stable edition.

DON'T install DivX

Install FFDshow - http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1055&s=50

Install MediaPlayer Classic

Have a beer

OK, went down this list. Only thing I did different was rather than downgrading nvidia drivers, I updated to the new ones they just released. Nada. I need to double check - but I think Battlefield 2 had a problem with drivers previous to 77.72, so not sure I'd like to downgrade. I play BF2 way too frequently for that :) I may try one of the old versions to see if it fixes the problem, but I dont' think I want to leave it that way.

Thing is - prior the format I had 77.72 and it didn't do this.

Mug - you mentioned a way to possibly fix w/o rolling back? I'm willing to try...

OK this just got wierder. Media Player Classic has the option to save bitmap, so I picked a spot that looked particularly bad and paused it, then saved. Was goign to post the image here just to make sure I showed exactly what it was doing.
The bitmap it saved was CORRECT. No odd colors, etc.

I had the same issue and for a temp fix I went into control panel and reduced hardware acceleration about half and that fixed the colors.

When you play BF2 you can just put it back up.
