How is ratio calculated in avis?

If i encode an avi with virtualdub, when playing in hw players, is it played with the exact ratio of two axises? or is it corrected with 4/3 (or 16/9) ratio?

if I encode in 720x576 a 4/3 original recording, will it appear as 4/3 or 5/4 /720/576)?

AVI files are expected to have square pixels. How your hardware player operates will depend on the player.In my case, I must set my TV to 4:3 mode in order to play AVI files correctly. I can then zoom to remove much of the letterboxing.Moved to H/W players forum, this has nothing to do with DivX encoding, per se.
