NON modified Player ?? error/screen

Hello all I am new here and first post so I will try to explain best I can.

I recently tried to make a backup of Enough ( yeah with J lo). Iteresting disc it was and maybe someone can answer/explain my query.

Disc details are as follows;

Total sizo on disc 7.7GB

VTS1 Main 16:9 3.79GB
VTS2 Main 4:3 3.68GB
VTS3 Preview trailer for the movie 94.1MB
VTS4 Music Vid 132MB
VTS5 has 2 vobs one is a black screen and other is a notice about region 1 disc both are continuous loops. 680K

Initially I tested to see what the avg bitrate (using big 3 method) would turn out to be. Sucky 2000 appx so choice was clear to remove the FS(VTS_02).

But my question is more to VTS5 than anything else. When I mounted the img, the software dvd player gave me a screen that went on to talk about the disc being fine and that I should use a NON-Modified player to view the disc.
It seems as if VTS_5 was somehow embedded to main movie VTS(s), just as the menus were.

I removed VTS_02 and VTS_05 and disc was not playable.
Tried again but only removed VTS_02 and Player played it with no problems and no Region 1 disc screen. Avg bitrate was 3822 so very nice quality.

So with that all in mind, what exactly is the VTS_05 and how does it play a part in the DVD structure? This is my baffling questing to anyone that has seen similar.

it sounds as though the original has RCE protection.

to be honest, i am not sure what the relationship is between VTS_05 and the RCE protection is, however i would not think that simply 'blanking' VTS_05 with pgc_edit/vobblanker/ifoedit would cause the problems you have described.

in the link i provided there is another link which provides suggested work-arounds, one of which is to 'play' the dvd for a short period, eject, then play the dvd again, which sounds like what you have done to get around RCE and be able to play your disc

edit: out of interest how are you deleting the vts'es you do not want?

Hey jel thanx for the quick reply.
I havent used any workarounds on the disc at all. that "region 1 disc non modified screen" only comes up when using a software dvd player. The standalone plays it just fine as long as VTS_5 is kept.

As for how I am blanking them. I used vobblanker and then ifoedit and did the get VTS.
After that it was rather simple as the movie was not 4.7GB + , so just a quick cook to disc.

[EDIT] I also read that link on RCE protection, thanks again for the info. I did have DVDDecrypter set to remove RCE, but it didnt do it as it I suspect it has something to do with VTS_5 being somehow embedded into the VTS_1 and VTS_2. This is the first time I have seen this and find it quite puzzeling.

as for your issue, i think all that has happened is that when you used vobblanker to 'delete' vts_05, you removed some commands that the dvd plays prior to playing the main movie. i would assume that if you 'blanked' vts_05 (replacing the warning messages with blank vobs), your disc would play on your standalone and the software player would no longer show the warning (as it is now reduced to to a 15 frame black video).

to be honest i am not much of a guru in the ways of vobblanker, so if you would like to get a more 'professional' response, i will get this thread moved to the ifo/vob editors forum.

i believe the reason why the rce error screen shows in your software player is that you have made the player 'region free' whereas possibly your standalone is only region1, and therefore the RCE protection is not invoked.... but i am only guessing <shrug>

huh. i love the assumption on the disc maker's part that any region 0 player MUST be modified.

in australia you'd be hard pressed to find a DVD player anywhere that isn't region 0 - region-locking was deemed "anticompetitive" here, and so region 0 players and even chipped playstations are legal.

(although you're not allowed to SELL discs from another region unless they've been classified by the OFLC - they'll pwn you for $100,000 if you're not careful, like they did to minotaur in melbourne).

Yeah Jel your likely right about the commands in VTS_5. This was a wierd disc all together. Normally you expect to see, or at least my experience so far, that one VTS set contains the menu assets. This one had the menus built into the main movie(s), and likely the need to retain VTS_5.
Odd that the software player didnt like it as it isnt modded at all. R1 is set in it which matches the disc.
As for moving the thread, I'll leave that to you if you think that others may benefit from the query. I found this one very interesting structure wise, even though I am still a n00b.

The RCE protection is always based on a check for the value stored in SPRM 20 (the player region code.)
If you want to remove the protection, it is not sufficient to blank the warning. You have to search for SPRM 20 in the VM commands, and recplace it with a constant value, matching the region code of your disc (not of the player!).
You can do that easily with PgcEdit. Launch the Region Code function. This function has an option to search for SPRM 20 in the whole DVD. Then, edit each command with SPRM 20 in it (by double clicking on the commend), and replace the SPRM 20 field by the constant value 1. Should work.
Note that it is sometimes impossible to use a constant value in some commands. If it's the case, post the PGC commands here (menu Info -> PGC), and I will try to help.
