Slow down in DVD Decrypting

I'm not really sure where to put this thread, but lately, I have noticed that my DVD-ROM is slower at decrypting as the read rate is slower. My DVD+RW drive is actually faster at reading than the ROM drive. I would rather use the ROM drive for decrypting and leave the RW drive for burning. Any ideas as to why the ROM drive would suddenly take a nose dive in reading? Movies play just fine. The ROM drive is a Samsung SD-616E 16x DVD ROM. Drivers updated from Dell. Thanks.

Could be a DMA problem.
Do a Seach on "DMA and PIO". See if that sheds any light on the subject.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, my drive is already set to DMA and not PIO. I went to the other link mentioned on the thread and there wasn't any information that could help my situation as well. I'm not sure what's wrong.

Just a thought... assuming you are 100% positive that the drives are actually running in DMA format (I recall reading that Windows can sometimes misreport that, depending on the version), then I wonder if you have something "recent" which is now running in the background, most typically something you are unaware of. Have you checked the task manager to see if anything unusual might be hiding and running, something which did not used to be there, and something which might be eating up a lot of system resources whiole you try to rip?

Also, how is the hard drive space? If this gets at all "tight," and Windows was limited in the size of the swap file it could create, that would most definitely cause a major speed loss.
