Heya guys!
I'm kinda new 'ta DVD buring, I use a Sony Internal/Dual layer and regular Sony DVDR's, so far everything has been workin smoothe, but I noticed when I get to the options for ~Quality Settings~ / ~Deep Analysis and Compression~ when I sometimes enable them, it can take up to 4 hours (or more) to complete! Is this all pretty normal? Not always do I get the option, (sometimes it says it isn't required) but I also like my discs to look good, I play 'em on a Progressive Scan Philips DVD player and use a Sony HDTV. So far I've been impressed with out enabaling them, ya can't really tell too much of a difference, but there's times when I did enable and could tell that it did make a difference. Weird, huh?

hi Sinfulcurves_RPG-7 and welcome to the forum!
the quality setting you are referring to is known as AEC (adaptive error compensation) and if you run a search on this in the forum you will find MANY threads discussing its pros/cons/useage etc.
search results (http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?searchid=162258)
the reason you do not always get the option to use this, is (if iirc) that it is only enabled when compression required is below a ceratin percentage, as there will be no real benefit above a certain point.
cheers

edit: in keeping with ammck55's well pointed questions in regards to the time it is taking you to back-up a dvd, you may want to also see 2cool's post here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=604317#post604317) which may provide additional "food for thought"

Welcome to the Forum:
The deep analysis option will encode your DVD in two passes, and even if you have the AEC (adaptive error compensation) options enabled, four hours sounds like a long time unless you're running an older, slower, CPU. Pull up Shrink's help files, there's a pretty good explanation of Deep Analysis there, but your times depend on so many other variables that it's hard to say. One simple little test would be to see if Shrink is still doing a straight backup in the times you're familiar with; this would be an indication that there's not a problem with your system.
I guess the best advice I could offer, is make sure that your system's stable, then decide if the superior quality you get from Deep Analysis and AEC is worth the sacrifice in time.

Spanx for the info, guys! There's much sweet loads of info on those threads, and I found myself comfy with the various personal experiences I read -- I know it's all a matter of personal taste, but I think the ~default/sharpness~ works best (for now, or so far anyways), I think the other option I did was the Max, but I can't remember.. I've burned so much stuff over the past days, hehe. Anyways...
