Hi,

I am planning on buying a dvd burner in the next week or so. I was wondering if you had any recommandations for me. I believe most (if not all) new burners are multiformat, so that is not the problem. I am buying the drive to be able to burn video dvds and then send them to be reproduced for destribution. So I need a good quality burner.

I am hesitating between Pioneer and Plextor. The plextor drives (PX-716 and PX-740) are more expensive than the pioneer one (DVR-109). But from reading a few threads here, I saw that pioneer is more widely used than any other drive out there. I tried to google about this subject, but found nothing talking about how drives compare to one another except in speed and the formats they support.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thx,
ib

If I were buying a new drive for burning I'd go for a BenQ DW1640.

Hi,

Please read this before :

I have a NEC 3520A. and for less than 50€, it's really a great burner. It's perfect to burn NGC games. The Pioneer and the Plextor are not as good for this

Here's some information that's worth reading:

ConsumerSearch' DVD Burner Reviews (http://www.consumersearch.com/www/computers/dvd-burner-reviews/)
PC World's Top Ten DVD Drives (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,118521,00.asp)

The NEC series is hard to beat for its combination of price and features. I own internal and external TDK drives and am happy with their performance and compatiblity, the one brand of discs I've found so far that they won't recognize are Philips. The only real knock on the TDK's is the price. The compelling reasons for buying this brand were being able to walk out of a local store with them, and a large supply of on-sale media.

Personally, if I were buying a new DVD writer today, it would be the NEC, but as your reading will show, NEC seems to be spotty on tech support. If you feel you're going to need a high level of support, you might want to go with the Benq. To me, the tech support ratings are a bit of a false flag; no matter which burner you get, the burning community at large will be your best resource.

The link supplied by LoloMc to the cdfreaks comparison is a good one.
