AVI->DVD first few seconds being chopped off

I there any way of preventing this from happening? I am using fairly standard settings and use CCE 2.5 with 4 passes. Audio is set to 192kbps. The videos range from a couple of minutes and up and are ntsc progressive.

if it's more than zero that may be your problem

Why is it set to 5 as a default. It also says that > 0 is recommended to avoid sync problems. Why is this?

I believe its a hung up from the good old SVCD days :), I have it set to 0 and have no sync issues.
