View Full Version : can somone suggest a capture card that captures like a tv displays?

i have an older bt8x based card and it caps the analog source (cable) as interlaced. of course tv's don't show the pic as interlaced, so I was wonder if there's a card that caps and shows the source the same as tv does (so I dont have to de-interlace via avs anymore) btw, i only cap toons so interlacing is very noticeable. maybe a card that's compatible with digital cable? i really dont know what to search for in the forums for this question.

If it's capturing as interlaced, then it's my bet the signal IS interlaced.
The only way to get around this with your current hardware is to
(a) use a pre-filter which de-interlaces the signal on the fly between the card and the hard drive as it's saved, or
(b) capture as interlaced, then process with a de-interlacing filter.
There are cards available that provide on board de-interlacing - according to Google (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=capture+cards+with+on+board+deinterlacing&spell=1) anyway. I've never used one personally however.

Because of the way (normal) TVs work you dont see the interlacing. Your capture card just caps what it is fed (that can be progressive or interlaced). You see the interlacing on your PC monitor because it shows both fields at the same time unlike your TV which shows one field after another. In other words it has nothing to do with your capture card but the type of display you use.

FWIW, ATI's MMC will let you capture deinterlaced &/or with IVT, but it doesn't always work perfectly.
OTOH, moving to a new card and software you probably won't notice the stuff that's bugging you now. There are a lot of issues involved, and the short, short reply is that most if not all will go away when you get something newer.
RE: Digital Cable... not really an issue.

If the source is true interlaced, then I always recommend doing no deinterlacing and then bobbing the video on playback with something like ffdshow+ReClock or DScaler. If the source is progressive, then I also recommend doing no deinterlacing, but you don't need to bob the video on playback since there is no interlace to handle.
Also note, just because a video is captured from analog video doesn't necessarily mean that it's interlaced - if you step through it in VirtualDubMod and see no mice teeth whatsoever then the program is 25p/29.97p which fits exactly in a 50i/59.94i signal.
If the source gives you an alternating pattern of progressive and interlaced frames, then it's telecined 24p and you will need to use a good IVTC algorithm to reconstruct the original frames. Since there are always both an upper and lower field for each film frame in a proper 3:2 pulldown, it should be possible to perfectly reconstruct the original frames, barring some sort of time compression or editing in the video domain before it was aired (both of which would break the telecine pattern).
