View Full Version : What codec to use for encoding for screen resolution of 176x220?

I'm planning to encode my movies or video files for use on my smartphone. The resolution of the phone in portrait mode is 176x220 and in landscape mode, 220x176. What is the "best" codec to use for those resolutions? I don't really have the time nor resources to test out all of the codecs, but I'm guessing the contenders are xvid, wmv9, and divx? I think h.264 is out of the question since most smartphones aren't very powerful and I doubt it's capability to decode such an advance codec.

WMV9 is also rather CPU taxing, in fact most codecs are, so if you aim to not kill the battery I'd go for MPEG-1.. it uses very little resources.

Most "SmartPhones", being Microsoft Windows Mobile devices, have hardware WMV playback so I don't think CPU load is an issue. Most have a maximum bit-rate though. I use M2PMCEncoderZX and it also has profiles for SmartPhones. It uses WMEncoder9, so you may just wanna bypass it and use that. SmartPhone 2003 does not play full screen movies and you are limited to 160x120. SmartPhone 2003SE DOES support full-screen 200x176.

If what you said is true, then maybe I'll include h.264 just to make it fair, but again I don't think there are any players that will decode the format for smartphones.

The phone has Windows Mobile 2003 SE and are you saying that WMV9 is best for that resolution? Thanks.
