View Full Version : Not so much a Ripping question as a playing question...

So, I just re-installed WindowsXP, updated it, updated all devices to current drivers, installed DivX and XVid codecs, and even went to the length of purchasing the PowerDVD SE add-on for Media Player. (I know, I know...why am I using Media Player?) All of my previously ripped DVDs, which I used DVD Decryptor and AutoGX to do, play great as long as I turn off overlays and turn on "use high quality mode" in Media Player. However, if I play ANY DVD, the quality is terrible. The colors are oversaturated, and the picture is grainy. This is the case NO MATTER WHAT PLAYER I USE. If I use another player besides Media Player to play ripped movies, they have the same crappy quality as the DVDs. When making these movies with AutoGK, I used the .avi container and the XVid codec.

My computer's specs:
MSI K7N2-Delta Motherboard
AthlonXP 1800+ CPU
512MB PC2700 RAM
Lite-On DVD-ROM
TSSTcorp CD-R/DVD-RW DL
WindowsXP SP2 (All Updates applied)
Chaintech GeForce FX5200 128MB video (77.72 Driver)
... just a modest PC.

Before install, DVDs AND ripped movies worked great on a variety of players. Now the only good quality playback that I get is by playing video files through Media Player; DVDs look like crap using ANY player. I've tried a wide variety of codecs and codec packs with no positive results.

What's going on?

Get rid of some of your codecs.
Having a lot of codecs on one system can cause problems. Codec clash!
Keep only what you need.

It's the video driver - cards below FX 5700 don't like the new 77.72 driver and the video is screwed up until you adjust it. You can change it under Advanced, Color settings - select Overlay with a video running so you can see your changes.

I had the same results with the 77.72 driver. That's why I installed the bleeding edge driver.

I'll give the codec cutback a try.

Any easy way to see all codecs installed?

Get into your Device Manager. Here's one way:

Start > Rt-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > Open "Sound, video, and game controllers > Dbl-click Video Codecs > Properties Tab....and there you go.
