View Full Version : Stuttering on A Bug's Life

A curious stuttering problem came up today as I was backing up my copy of A Bug's Life. The full screen option didn't have the stuttering problem, but the widescreen option did. These are on the same disc. The disc is the first release and probably wasn't anamorphic. As a matter of fact, the options on DVD-RB states that only 4:3 ratio aspect was available. The question is why does the widescreen presentation stutter while the fullscreen presentation play flawlessly? The stuttering is video only and there doesn't appear to be a lag with the audio. It is very similar to the problem I had with the extras on Toy Story 2 which was fixed with version 1.0 rc 2. I currently have DVD-RB Pro version 1.0 rc 4 using HC encoder version 0.15 at best setting and CG matrix with 25% reduction on extras.
Incidently, has anyone else tried backing Beauty and the Beast? I'm figuring the poort quality in rebuilding was a result of three versions of the movie being fit into a DVD-5 disc.
Am I the only one who backs up Disney/Pixar animation on this board?

I do all the time.
It's really hard to take movies that have more than one version on a disc and get decent quality on output. The original is stretching the available bitrates already when it loads in the neighborhood of 4 hours on a DVD -- trying to fit that on a DVD-5 and still maintain high quality is close to impossible, even with the best encoder on the planet (CCE).

Of course not :D
I usually make that backups to DivX... I gave my little son a DivX player... you know... CDs are less expensive lol ... and they are quicker to burn :D

Oh good. For a moment, I thought I was the only one who bought or backed up Disney/Pixar animation for his kid (uh, yeah...for the kid :rolleyes: ). At any rate, I take it that the problem I had with Beauty and the Beast is the same for everyone else (maybe less so with CCE which I don't have). But how does that explain the stuttering on the A Bug's Life? The quality of the stuttering images are great. It just stutters with widescreen, but not with the full screen.

I own "A Bug's Life" NTSC, Region 1 and have backed it up without issue in the past. I'll run it again with v1.00 RC4 and see if something new is up.
What encoder did you use? This sure sounds like problems that happen with failure of the encoder to hold the bitrate maximum...
[Added] Never mind, I just saw you'd used HC in the first post...

Thanks for checking. I know that you probably have alot of other things to do rather than chase down something that no one else has had a problem with. Is your "A Bug's Life" the collector's edition? I don't know what the difference is with the collector's edition, but I have the original release that isn't the collector's edition (yellow spine with Flik looking over a leaf on the cover).
By the way, did you also run into blockiness with Beauty and the Beast? I figured that three full movies on a DVD-5 disc would cause trouble.
Thanks again.

I was wondering if my stuttering on "A Bug's Life" was able to be recreated? Sorry if this wasn't enough time. I don't know what an appropiate time frame should be. Thanks.

@curious d
I just ran my copy of "A Bug's Life" through... and I could find no stuttering. I used DVD-RB v1.00 RC5.1 against the same version (that's the one I own too) NTSC, R1... and yes it is 4:3 on both the full-screen and the widescreen options... sigh...
There must be some odd setting somewhere. I'd suggest you edit your REBUILDER.INI file and remove everything under the [Options] area -- and then try backing it up again. Or perhaps a reinstall of DVD-RB might help.

Since my computer crashed, a reinstall of DVD-RB won't be hard to do. Thanks. I'll try it.
