View Full Version : Fastest way from DVD to AVI/MPEG/...

What is the fastest way to get DVD (directly or already demuxed m2v/ac3) to AVI or anyother non-DVD format, one that can be played in Subtitle workshop?
The quality (video and audio) is not a problem, the file will be only temporary since i only use it to create own subtitles for the DVD itself. (SW supports VOB playback but is buggy, and thus impossible to use in reality). Speed is what im looking for here...
Another option would be to find better or equivalent subtitle editor that does support direct DVD/VOB playback.
I hope someone can help me here. Thanks in advance.

why do you want to encode video if you just need the subtitles?
Rip them directly from DVD with e.g. SubRip
Hope I didn't missunderstood you

@Mystiqq, If I understand you correctly, you just want an avi (regardless of the quality) so you can play it back in Subtitle Workshop while you write/author your own subs?
Use AutoGK and set 'Fixed Width' to a low resolution in the Advanced Options (lower the resolution, faster the encoding), choose codec as XviD, choose audio as AC3 (so you don't have to transcode the audio), choose Target Quality as something like 60%-70% and do the encoding. This will result in a 1-pass encode and the final avi should be usable for your purposes.
But there are other ways of creating new subtitles for your DVD directly without converting them to avi. Take a look here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=80109).

I need the video to be "compatible" with subtitle workshop so i can make the subtitles. The dvd has subtitles but not in the language i want/need. This is the only way since there is no dvd (any region) that has the subtitles i want/need.
I did take the already existing subtitles that the dvd had and will use the timecodes so i dont need to start from scratch, but like i said earlier, the problem is that now i need a video/audio that i can use within subtitle workshop.
Already did one encode using AutoGK (first time) and it took long time, but i did use heavy compression (21 mins into ~170MB). Perhaps i should use bigger file size to speed things up?

Yes, you got me right. :)
That autoGK advice will come handy, since like i said earlier, already did one encode with AutoGK but didnt really know what settings will affect speed etc.
I also have SubtitleCreator and did test it yesterday, but it isnt very good tool for doing subtitles from scratch when compared to Subtitle Workshop. SW has a lot of good features that help a lot. SC looks like what i probably will use after ive got the text version ready.
Ill test more on AutoGK and see what happens. :)
Thanks again.
