Autogk/avi.Net question

Hi everyone!

ive been doing some simple tests with Autogk and avi.NET to determine which one is the best to use with divx6 codec.

after a few backups i realised that avi.NET was 2 times faster encoding than Autogk, on my last test i encoded a couple of Red DWARF episodes from a dvd i own.

original size source was 1 gig
divx final size 450 megs
resolution 640x480
1 audio track mp3 128 cbr

i used both settings with the 2 programs and it took them the following times to finish the encoding:

Autogk- 1h59m
avi.net-1h3m


i found out that this 2 tools use the(almost) same tools/method to encode, so why the time difference?

its a wild guess but does Autogk takes longer because it doesnt use the"balanced" mode and uses one of the other modes to encode to divx? if it doesnt why the time difference?

i also tried backing up xmen i have ondvd and the time differences were even bigger then

i used Autogk 2.12b and 2.13b

AutoGK uses VirtualDubMod to encode.
avi.NET uses AVS2AVI to encode.

AVS2AVI is faster.

Hi iNFO-DVD, I use dr.divx 1.0.6, is avi.net faster? I am seeking a faster method to convert tons of my DVD.(autogk sure failed, because it really slow, take a double of time as compare with dr.divx).

Also, does avi.net still support divx 5.2.1 pro? Because at this moment I still can't trust the new divx 6, especially there are too many complaints about its long encoding time..

The Red Dwarf discs (if they are like the PAL version) arent very good for testing imo. The DVD's i own are hideous quality, i was shocked when i got them. Not worth the few hundred i paid for them..

The time differences would have to do with the settings selected i believe. AutoGK does some filtering inside the processing which would slow down the encoding a bit, but should in theory yeild better quality. Im not sure about avi.NET since ive never personally used it, or read much about it.

avi.net on my system is faster than dr divx. i havent compared encoding times but on my system each pass takes about the same time as the duration of the movie. 1 hour movie will take 2 hours to encode and im not using a dual core cpu just a pentium 4, 2.8 ghz

but you cant look only at speed, if you select cbr mp3 in drdivx it will mess up the final aspect ratio of the divx file.
avi.net produces a much closer aspect ratio to the source than Autogk(even with itu resizing selected) and dr divx

im not here making propaganda about avi.net as i am a exdrdivx user but as soon i tried avi.net i never used drdivx again

I always use cbr for audio part, because I get from some information that vbr may lead to non-sync of audio and video easier(may be wrong, I don't know). A res. 640*480 movie will become 512*368(not 512*384) by default, do you refer to that situation? But really the problem of cbr?

I am going to try avi.net, but should I also install some AC3filter or else to make it works? I have the dr.divx 1.0.6(divx 5.2.1 pro) on my pc, it come with its own AC3filter and mpeg2 decoder(in the divx own directory), does avi.net come with its own component without conflict with dr.divx? thats why i had to go to options in dr divx and change to cbr instead of vbr(default) whenever i changed that it would go from lets 640x352 when mp3 vbr to 720x400 when mp3 changed to cbr

im new to aspect ratios so when i found out what this meant i ditched drdivx for avi.net and i dont regret it.

if you have power dvd installed you wont need the ac3 or mpeg plugin

Cm's digital video tool let you input the resolution and see if it is the same or close to the one in the dvd

AVS2AVI is faster.

lol. So not true... Encoding method doesn't really matter much. AutoGK uses h263 optimized quantization that slows encoding a lot, but is supposed to produce better quality.
