Hi there,
i'm looking to get a standalone dvd player that can also play .avi files in xvid and divx format. Can anyone recommend some players that are particularly good? I was looking at the Philips dvp720sa and also the DK Digital 339. I'm really not sure though...
Any help appreciated,
Jon.

many good players under the 40 pounds mark including dk and yamada
personally the H & B DX-3255 with progressive scan seems about the best buy these days

Don't have a telly myself, but my friend has the above philips and loves it. Plays everything, no problems. My girfriend has the Philips 630, which is cheaper and doesn't seem to play dts, but plays divX and Xvid no problem. Be aware of the QPEL issue when creating avis and there can be difficulites with Open DML Avis too.

I own a Philips DVP630 too (infact I own 2) and i must say it's worth the money, which is not much :D If you know that he can't handle XviD GMC and/or QPel then you have no problem. I never had. This babe played everything I've thrown at it, so I guess if the higher models are no ***** Philips is a good choice, not only because of constant firmware updates.
EDIT:
I don't get money from Philips, or get I :sly:
EDIT2:
Now as I think of it there are some flaws:
just 10 characters shown at menu
no bold/italic/special characters for subz

Depending on where you live, there really are loads to choose from.
Personally, I would always go for a well respected brand named player fitted with an MediaTek MT1389xx chip-set. Or one of the NeroDigital Certified players.... The spec and design for the new XORO HSD 4000 looks good ;)

Yes, the above is of course true.
And if you are looking for further info, SeeMoreDigital kindly (thanks) has a link here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=94536) for info and updates for the Philips player and a useful and well researched sticky at the top of the page (thanks again )
