League of Extraordinary Gentlemen problem

I didn't know exactly where to post this so if it's in the wrong place then I am sorry and Mods pleaes fell free to move it to a more suitable location.

The problem is It was my birthday recently and one of the presents I received was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

It is a PAL Region 2 DVD and I unwrapped it around my girlfriends house and wanted to watch it in her SAP.

All the copyright notices and adds came on fine but the problem started when I wanted to play the movie from the DVD's Menu.

I hit the play movie then the animation came on then the 20th Century Fox DVD logo came on, then suddenly I get the black screen with the UK & Ireland in red text along with the copyright notice which you usually get after the movie has finished. Then it returns to the menu.

So in order to watch it I had to go to scene select and select the first chapter.

Now the movie played but no sound so I had to hit the Audio button on remote to get the sound.

Now I thought I just received a dodgy badly authored DVD and was going to see if I could get a replacement from FOX.

However when I got home and tried it on my PC with PowerDVD and my own SAP it played fine with no probs.

What I can't understand is that my gf's SAP is only a year old and usually plays eveything thrown at it.

Have you guys got any idea why this DVD will not work properly on my gf's DVD Player?

hmmm. some players do VERY weird things. in particular, there's one at my work (we use it because along with the samsung, if it plays on this, it'll play on anything™). it's a "Conia" brand - a cheap import. uses the same remote layout as "sonken" and a couple of other no-namers.

anyway, what this player does is not run command-sequences. this means if there's multiple audio tracks (DTS anybody?) on the movie but not the extras, the DVD will probably store your audio selection in a register somewhere and run a script to point you to the right audio track when you hit "play movie". if this script doesn't run (or doesn't run correctly), then it's conceivable you'll get no audio, or even a skipped feature depending on how the disc was authored.

well, anyway, try to inform the authors of the problem (i'm not sure how to find who authors for fox in what region - if you're lucky they might have a web forum for this stuff) and tell them the make and model of your player. they may or may not be interested (they should be, but if it's a really dodgy DVD player they're not likely to sacrifice playability in other machines to fix a problem with a non-compliant player).

my dvd player doesn't like that "trivial pursut: pop culture" my parents bought a few years ago, infact every player they try'd it on failed, they could only access part of the questions

I went over to VideoHelp and looked up her DVD Player but alas I did not get much info from over there.

It is only a cheap player a Pacific DVD-1001z and usually plays anything I throw at it even VCD's &SVCD's and works on any matrix that I have backed to.

So I was suprised by it not playing this movie.

Thanks for the info. I was going to try and Phone Fox and find out why this does not work on a player that is only a year old.

Maybe I will go to their forum as you suggested and see if I can get any joy there. Thanks again for the info you supplied.

Lmao :D. I agree how Nemo managed to park his sub as near as he did was a bit of a joke. I mean for starters it was in a canal and it surely wound have founded well before getting that far up surely. :)
