Capture Video to Stills

My apologies if this problem has been answered before. It's such a simple and, I think, common problem that I'm surprised I could not find an answer somewhere.

My company has a VHS tape that they produced in the late 1980s. I would like to capture stills from it for our website.

I have a Lite-On (freestanding) DVD recorder so transfering it to DVD video (VOB files) is no problem.

I've searched this site along with a few others but could not find a way to capture stills from the DVD.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

PS. I'm running XP HOME.

Make the VOB as you suggested. Then use DGIndex from the DGMPGDec package to open the VOB and save BMPs as needed. You'll have I frame granularity in DGIndex. If you need full frame granularity, serve it with DGDecode into VirtualDub and then use VirtualDub's Video/Copy to clipboard funtionality.

You'll also want to resize your .bmp files - PCs use square pixels, but DVD's do not.

Full size NTSC DVDs are 720x480, resize this to a 4:3 image with square pixels (e.g.: 640x480, 320x240, etc.) in order to obtain a corrected aspect ratio.

I found and downloaded dgmpgdec140.zip. The contents look rather complicated for a newbie like me. That is, there's more than just an executable file in there. I'll have to wait until tonight when I have more time to investigate.

I have Windows Media Player 9 and PowerDVD. You would think there would be a way to use these to capture a still picture. No?

there is a screenshot function in powerDVD afaik, so you can use that.

for DGIndex, just run the executable, heh, no need to worry about the other files... (well read the README.txt ;))

Never mind. I found the frame capture button in PowerDVD. Works perfectly. Thanks to all.
