XviD-1.0.3-20122004 loose quality at maximum bitrate

Even at 8000kbps, my avi file loose image quality when I encode it with virtual dub. My avi file is captured from a game, cristal clarity and I want to make smaller with xvid but with no waste quality. I use XviD-1.0.3-20122004, bitrate 8000 single pass encodinng and default setings....
Please help with quanti matrix or something for solve the problem if exist some solution.

8000 kbps sound excessive. XviD is a loosy codec and you will loose quality but it shouldn't be much.

Captured gameplay is tough work for the codec because of the shapness.
No need for custom matrices for this kind of source IMO. However if you think you loose to much detail I would recommend Didée sixofnine. Download here: Linky (http://hjem.tele2adsl.dk/nightrhyme/Didees%20SixOfNine-High-Bitrate-Max=20.rar).

If I need max quality for this kind of source I would just use standard h.263 matrice, single pass, target quantizer 2. Limit quants to 2-31, QuaterPixel,VHQ for B-frames, VHQ MODE: 4 everything else on default.

Thanks, with theese settings using last xvid, I'm loosing less quality, image is sharper :) . But if I use same settings for encoding DV material captured from a miniDV camcorder, image rezulting has some dysfumctions .... I've tried to encode then with 2 pass... not much difference..
Can u tell me some settings to encode proper this kind of material? I'm a neubie so I'd like to learn :D

Sorry. I have no experience with DV-CAM source :scared:
Isn't it like 60fps and what format(container etc.) is it ?

I hope someone else will jump in and advice you regarding this source ;)

Please be more precise - what do you mean by "dysfumctions"? Interlacing (as described here (http://www.100fps.com/))? Blocky picture?

The image is ok, just not sharper enough, that's all..... well is ok I think but....encoding time is very long.....same avi file with divx6 I encode in less that half of time at better quality
example: encoding my avi file (57 seconds)with XviD-1.1.0-Beta2-04042005 with h.263 matrice, single pass, target quantizer 2. Limit quants to 2-31, QuaterPixel,VHQ for B-frames, VHQ MODE: 4 everything else on default (nightrhyme settings) gives me a avi file with ~1600kbps bitrate with the settings posted above in 7 minutes, very long time!
encoding same avi file with divX6 standard options, one pass, 4000 kbps bitrate gives me a file with ~2500kbps bitrate in 2 minutes.....
SO should be divX 6 the answer? I refuze to believe that! There is something I'm wrong about...

You're using almost all slow (and resulting in highest quality encode) options of XviD and comparing it to the 'standard' options of DivX6 + you're getting a XviD encode with 1600kbps and you're comparing it with a 2500kbps one.. also you're comparing Constant Quant mode with Constant BitRate.. in other words you're comparison is screwed in many many ways ;)

Try the Dideé's 6of9 matrix. Should be sharper than h.263.

You can also increase the resolution for example. If your source is 320x240 you increase to 640x480 with Lanczos4 for example. This helps also.

For an even better image quality you cant try to unlock q1... but the bitrate should increase a lot and the quality only a little. But if you don't care about the size then...

Use a sharp custom quantization matrix. 6of9 or EQM V3UHR at quant 3 or high bitrate.

Also if its interlaced and you want to watch it on a progressive display (watching it on your computer) it might look better to you if you use a high quality deinterlacer before encoding.
