My system:

MCE2005
Audigy2S (SPdif Passthrough)
AC3 (Spdif Passthrough)
5.1 Reciever doing the decoding

The issue:
Any media format that plays in MCE (music, movies, etc) produces this annoying volume display popup that needs no interaction between my fingers and remote.
I uninstalled AC3 filter and the issue went away. I reinstalled, and it seems that the issue only happens when i set the AC3 to SPDIF passthrough.

If SPDIF is disabled in AC3 filter, no annoying volume overlay. And no 5.1 audio :(
If enabled, annoying volume overlay appears.

Is there anyone out there that has overcome this issue? Or.
Are there alternatives to AC3? Or.
Can I just disable the volume overlay somehow in MCE?

I cant do anything on MCE right now w/o seeing that stupid volume thing, and its ruining my life! haha.

The ffdshow audio ds filter can replace the AC3Filter for the direct/indirect(ac3 encoding) spdif passthrough, although it does not seem to be an AC3Filter's influence.
