I use my ATI capture card to record tv shows. I would like an easy way to record to a dvd+rw so I can watch later on my tv. I have roxio, nero, and pinnacle, but no matter what I use to author the dvd, it says the file of a 2 hour movie recorded from TV is way too big to fit. Prior to trying to author for dvd, the files are well under 4 gig. I've been recording in MPEG-2.

If you have the full Roxio version with DVD Builder, try that - under Preferences there is a setting for maximum compression, which should let you fit about three hours of video on a DVD.

thanks. I tried that, with a 3.7 gig file, and even on max compression, Roxio says the video is too big to fit on a DVD.

You may need to do something a bit more complicated, like use a DVD authoring program to make the file ready, then use DVD Shrink to fit it to a single disc.
Did you try a regular DVD-ROM?

Yes, I tried DVD-R. Last night, I got it to work by using Divx2DVD to convert, and then burned with NERO, but the picture quality was very significantly reduced.

The picture quality is reduced because every time you compress and recompress the same video data it will lose quality. Does your capture device support capture directly to DVD complient MPEG2 video? If so you should be able to author the DVD without transcoding the video data.
Cheers!

There is a preset within the ATI software for DVD output.

I use the preset, but 2 hour movies come out too long. I guess I need to customize the settings.
