Hi,

I have been trying to create .avi files from my dvds, mainly due to the convenience of a reduced file size, etc,- because i want to have my collection on my computer without it taking up all my hard drive space :)

Must stress here i am a complete newbie to everything concerned with this sort of thing and therefore do not wish to be flamed for not knowing about something or other which is perhaps a common tool or process- there is such a wealth of information out there concerning dvd ripping etc i cannot research it all.

Anyway- have followed the Gordian Knot tutorial by the letter- including all robot4rip areas and have reached the very end; namely "5: Add chapters and subtitles"

However- what do i do now? In the projects folder that robot4rip creates there is no single avi file of the movie- have i missed a step/done something wrong?

Basically, what do i do to complete this process and produce a single file- which is the film and its sound?

Any help would be appreciated greatly- i am very confused :) Thanks a lot.

Hi,

sooner or later you will have to burn the avis to dvd unless you have a gigantic hard drive or small dvd collection

Any help would be appreciated greatly

my advice is to compress your dvds with autogk or avi.net available here at doom9 and put four backups on each dvd and buy a dvd/divx player (very cheap nowadays) and enjoy your backups on the tv in the living room with a cold beer in your hand instead of using your pc to view your backups

Hey man, thanks a lot for the reply :)

Yeah- i have a second hard drive- about 200gigs- especially for my media
- CD collection, and DVDs etc- (DVD collection is about 30 at the moment lol)

The reason im into the .avi idea is because my computer is my main entertainment station :). It has the surround sound and a second, larger monitor to watch films on and a big, comfy chair and all that stuff- plus my girlfriend doesn't go near the pc so its a bonus to be honest lol- my equivalent of having a garden shed and a train track ;)

AND, im genuinely interested in trying to do this- so any help will be kool!

Cheers

ok when it comes to chapters and subs avi/divx/xvid doesnt support that.

there is a good tool called fairuse wizard that will let you output the dvds with subtitles and chapters into the ogm or mkv format/container, since you are using the pc there are players that support ogm/mkv like Bsplayer or zoom player to name a few.

or since youre not thinking about using standalone players you can try nero digital format wiil compress your dvds and keep subs and have chapters like in the dvd,

www.nero.com

it depend on your budget

ogm/mkv free

nero digital pay

If you were following this guide - Step 1: Basic GKnot Setup (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-basics-xvid.htm), here is the last part (Step 2: Encoding video) (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-xvid.htm). And the main page (Step 0: First time setup) (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main4.htm).

Or this guide is recommended - http://www.rita.lt/guides/GKnot_DVDtoAVI.htm

I would try AutoGK if I were you, it is a great way to get started, and very easy to use. You can download it from this site and there are guides to using it here as well.

Cheers!
