I downloaded some audio files which were m4a files. Is there a simple method to convert them to mp3 files?

By using iTunes (drag & drop your files + right click & convert to mp3).

I did that but when I clicked Burn, iTunes said the files counld not be burned. So I used nero to create a cd-rw, then copied them to iTunes and finally got them as mp3 files.

Yes,of course.Just download from www.dbpoweramp.com program called Db PowerAmp Music Converter,and you are on the horse.

DbPower did not recognize the m4a files.
