Windows explorer crashes using xvid?

I have been using xvid 1.0.3 to play my downloaded "Call for Help" TV programs with no problems until yesterday when I was getting windows explorer crashes in the referencing module xvid.ax. This was only when I played one of my downloaded avi files ...in fact clicking on that file or moving it to the recycle bin also caused a crash! Very weird behavior indeed. I now uninstalled the xvid codec and I am using the latest Divx instead. I did a full virus scan and my machine is clean. Has anyone heard of this problem before? Thanks.

This "piracy" is encouraged at leoville.com because the program only is available in Canada not in the USA through Rogers cable. The host is Leo Laporte [leoville.com is his website] formerly of Techtv. The letter of the law may not be breached in this case because the copyright holder gave his consent. Your statement has little relevance to my question.

a certain number of posts are about illegal movies and it could harm the forum, hence this reticence...

About your problem - a wild guess: it could be related to the 'old' AVI-Bug in WinXP (WinXp scans movie files and 'lock' them even if you're not using them). So, you could try to fix it. Google this: windows xp avi bug.

you could try using ffdshow instead of the xvid filter. this issue I think your referring to is the preview window in XP and should be fixed with all the most recent versions.

he didn't know the program was being allowed by the supposed copyright holder. he was giving you a general rule of the forums. Please don't scold him because you didn't give enough info about the content in the first place.

No problem on my end or umbrage taken. I was just clearing up that copyright caveat. I am now good to go using Divx 6.0 alone to decode those avi files. Evidently on my machine there is a conflict that has developed between xvid and divx. I installed xvid originally because the previous version of divx did not provide smooth playback of certain avi files on my Winxp Sp2 box. Thanks.

I'm using the latest version of Xvid and it's still happening to me.
