firewire to pc connection problems

just bought a panasonic mindv and a firewire card.
The firewire card is usb2.0+1394 combo. I also got a cable and ulead videostudio 8 with it.
When i run the ulead it operates the camera ok it plays the tape and rewinds etc but doesnt play on the screen. It comes up with the line capture module initiate problem. I have tried other software and get the same results some say class not registered. I have installed panasonic codec etc and tried everything. Now at wits end.
The card went in OK even tried it in another slot. There is another cable connector at the back of the card which is inside the case when the cover is on but not sure what that is for.

I am a beginner and was thinking of reformating hard drive etc and starting again.
Any help would be brilliant.

Hi Bigman, first of all don't panic ... ok NOW PANIC !!! :D :D

Nooo come on take it easy ...

First of all you must understand which cable and connection port are you using.
Normally, to transfer DV stream on Harddisk, we use a DV-IO port on the Digital Cam (4 pins), the right Firewire Cable (6 to 4 pins) and a Firewire card on PC or Notebook.

So the right connection is:

CAM DVport <- 4pin ----FWcable---- 6pin-> Firewire port on PC


Then, always normally, you must install the Panasonic DV codec (or other DV codec) and then use a tool like WinDV (Freeware).

In this situation you normally can transfer the DV stream.

Pay attention at filesize, DV files are very big, near 13 GB every hour of video.

the cable came with the card. it is a 6pin to 4 pin and also the port in the camera is a DV it also has a usb which works OK.
The camera operates ok using ulead software but just no capture.

USB is used in some cam like yours and my Samsung VPD15i only for acquire still picture.

The only way to acquire the DV stream is using Firewire connection.

Now which products are you using (cam,card,ulead model or versiaon) ?

i am using a panasonic NV-GS17, FIREWIRE 1394 PCI CARD NEC CHIP AND ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 8

I phoned panasonic. Then formated my hard drive and started again. Now its working OK.
Now the next easy question is.
What is the best software for editing.

You need Linear or NonLinear Software?

Depends by price / friendly / features / output needs!

Price: VirtualDub (freeware)
Friendly: Pinnacle Video Studio 9 + Hollywood FX Mega 5
Features: Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 / Pinnacle Liquid Edition / Discreet Fire

But it's only my opinion!

If you have VideoStudio 8 working that should be a good program if the OEM version you probably recieved with your firewire card is not to striped down a version. You do not need to have the Panasonic DV codec installed unless you are using VirtualDub or another program that requires a VfW (video for windows) DV codec. Windows XP has built in support for DV using the Microsoft DV codec.
