Windows Update

Anyone noticed that Windows Updates has now WGA (Windows Genuine Advance) enabled? If you dont have Genuine Windows you can't update them throught Windows Update Service. Cant find any refference on the Internet but I tested it on 2 computers. :D

From what I have heard, that check is seriously flawed. M$ flagged the genuine version of my friend's Windows XP which he uses at work as pirated (and refused updates) and did the opposite for a non-genuine version he had on his home PC. :rolleyes:

All you have to do is disable the Windows Genuine Advantage 'Add-on' in Internet Explorer's Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage Add-ons area.

That's a SP2 thing isn't it? I was curious and looked, but I don't have it here

This shall in no way excuse copying, but users of pirated copies actually have the advantage. Since most pirated copies are based on the volume license version which doesn't require the intrusive activation process, the program should be called Genuine Windows Disadvantage.

You mean that most Pirated Copies are Windows Corporate Edition that dont require activation??

Someone on another forum recommended this site for non-IE browser updating. Obviously since it doesn't use ActiveX it doesn't require the MS Validation addon.

I can't vouch for the reliability of the company, and there is always an increased security risk when downloading security updates from non-official sources. Also, there may be a slight lag between MS availability and this site, and I think in only does critical Windows updates.

Yeah, it's an SP2 thing. Personally, I've never had any issues with SP2. I've never run across anyone that has issues with it either. (As in had my hands on a machine that had issues with it)

All the excuses I hear about people reasons for refusing to install SP2 are usually invalid.

I'm one of the people that had problems with sp2, if I had a slipstream disk I"m sure they would evaporate, but with the update-download it caused massive system instablity, buth times I had it, once was after a fresh instal of sp1 too

The release of a service pack is always a good time to setup your machine again from scratch, thus getting rid of all the crap and issues that accumulated since the last install. In the old days, I used to re-setup my Windows every month, with W2K and especially XP even I've grown lazy, but the reinstalls with the service packs definitely helped.

Well, each new windows install brings problems. So, I always try to keep by setup clean, but I always fail :D. I'm formatting each months or two.

You mean that most Pirated Copies are Windows Corporate Edition that dont require activation??People have written programs that generate serial numbers that are used for bulk licensing, which don't require activation. Ones for Windows XP have existed for years, I recently saw one for Windows 2003 Server, and I just got a phone call from a friend yesterday that said he spotted one for Windows XP 64-bit. You shouldn't be able to use an activating serial number on more than one computer because it is supposed to contact MS to see if the serial number has been used before. If the OS cannot contact MS within a certain amount of time, you can't use the OS. MS Office has used this feature for years also, although many people don't know because they have always used illegal bulk licensing keys for Office.
