After the prepare stage, when the keep menu but blank extras mode is selected, it says the movie compression will be 48% (for Hero), wheras if I do just the movie it is about 80% surely the menus can't take up that much space? Am I doing something wrong, or am I just not understanding it correctly. Any help would be appreciated

...surely the menus can't take up that much space?...

Did you check the size of VIDEO_TS.VOB and all of VTS_XX_0.VOB ?

If I remember well , there are some unreferenced cells (they are real big parts of black Video never used in any part of the menu , they are there only to make it more difficult to shrink the movie with quality) in the menu of the Movie you're backing up , so try to run it into VobBlanker(able to blank out unreferenced cells) or , better for sizing , into MenuShrink !!!

I don't know which version of Hero you're backing up, but the R1 Miramax version has a DTS track along with 3 DD 5.1 tracks which, together, take up a huge amount of space. I hope you're dumping the ones you don't want.

Thanks for the replies, There's no DTS on the copy I have. I've not heard of voblanker or menushrink, but Ill try them out, so thanks for that.
I was wondering with the blank extras setting on when you get the log from the prepare phase, is it giving you the compression ratio as if the extras were there, but then encoding it at a different ratio

@jdobbs : this is a good point !!! Is it possible (after blanking some extras - or whenever you open the blank extras window) to have the log window showing the new gained BitRate ? :thanks:

Any help would be appreciated It's also possible that there are several small VTSs that are being copied intact that can add up to more space.
