Are there any codecs that are free, good quality (comparable to xvid) and have drm? Not anything too draconian, just the ability to only play on the computer it was downloaded too, but maybe lets you burn a copy. Thanks.

I"m fairly certain you cna drm anything you like provided you have the right container and tools
but I have to ask, why?

He's trying to start a company that provides legal anime fansub downloads that will be downloadable at the same time it airs on japanese TV. He was told on another forum that there is no way that any japanese anime company would be willing to give him a license to do this unless the episodes were encoded in a DRM format. Hence the reason why he's asking =D. Although there are additional things that make the goal unrealistic to anyone other than perhaps a multi-billion dollar company willing to take huge losses for a couple of years to get a fanbase.

MKV has a password feature IIRC.

Soulhunter had talked about this feature in some discussions about DRM but according to him it hasn't been implemented yet.

All... Christian wanted me to point you all to http://corecodec.org/projects/dscrypt ... If you are all not familiar with this Jory created this set of filters for Directshow encryption/decryption. IMHO... it is a great start for an open DS based system... however... I personally think that if anyone was to seriously continue to work on this that some form of server 'touch' and client update is required for it to be a valid DRM solution.

However, as is... it is a great proof of concept... and hey, it works ;-)
