archive format

i read a lot formats in this forum (like real, mov, mp4, avi, etc...)
Which format do u actually use to store/archive ur movies? and why?

Let me kick off:
I use mp4, coz support for this format seems to be guaranteed, there is a lot of opensource tools around for, and in my case supported by darwin streaming server.

I use avi currently because I'm to busy/lazy to switch to mkv, once I get my other projects done I'll fully switch over to mkv, in within a couple years I'll hopefully have my media server bought and set up after I get through my network tech courses it will be a breeze ot set everything up :)

mkv for vfw-codec's

avi, occasionally mkv. I still cannot see why would i need mp4, editing it is a real pain, and it doesn't have any real advantage (for me, anyway).

Well for me... could it be anything else other than .MP4 ;)

I currently back up all my audio CD's to AAC-LC in .MP4.... And all my DVD movies to MPEG4-SP video with either 2Ch or 6Ch AAC audio in .MP4

When I use Windows, it's always XviD and LC-AAC in *.mp4. Most bang for the buck format/codecs imo.

Still XviD+AC3 in AVI -> DVD5... ^^

For movies: Xvid, 5.1 He-AAC in MKV on a single disc XCD.

I hope to start using X.264 in place of Xvid when development stops advancing at such a ferocious pace.

I would like to use MP4, but i figure its main strong point is that it *should* be a mass market standard sooner or later and if i'm gonna use XCD i've kinda defeated that point. Props also to Mosu's excellent muxing tool which IMHO makes MKV much easier to use than MP4, for now at least.

For music: Lame MP3 --alt-preset standard

I have a large existing mp3 collection and a hardware mp3 player that cannot be upgraded to newer codecs, plus that config is 100% transparant as far as i can hear so i see no point in updating it.
