Converting .ts hd stream to avi

I have a couple of huge files, .ts captures, that I want to convert to divx/xvid or whatever is the best format. The capture is 720p, and I want to keep that resolution. Any recommendations as to which codec and settings I should use? I also want to keep the ac3 stream in the signal. There are more than one .ts file, but I want them all to be converted into one resulting file.

you need a codec which can decode realtime on your PC :)

xvid and vp6 are the most lightweight IMO.

I have the files already, so I don't need to do it realtime i think? I should perhaps have said "files" instead of "stream". I suppose xvid is the more common and most supported codec of the two?

MPEG2 decoding is pretty fast, even for HD (if you have good HW). HD decoding with other codec (MPEG4, VPs and RV) is a lot more heavy on the CPU. So, you need a codec which can decode your file in realtime.

My 3000+ can't decode HD RV in reatime, but can for xvid and VP6.

I know my computer is capable of playing 720p xvid, because I've tried that before. So, any suggestions on how I go about converting these .ts files into xvid keeping good quality?

I don't think that he will run into this problem. 720p means the video is progressive, so no need to mess with deinterlacing, and as far as i know in the HDTV realm the pal and ntsc distinction is meaningless anyway.
