View Full Version : Suggestion--portable profiles!

I think many people are using AutoGK these days to make small movies to watch on a PDA or Smarthphone, using a media player like TCMCP (formerly Betaplayer). (Great freeware media player for PDAs and Smartphones!) (It will play DIVX and XVID, actually just about any kind of video or audio.)

And there are these small devices (PMP) sold now specifically for portable video viewing.

(Frankly that's my only use for AutoGK. I don't see the reason behind backing up a DVD to CD (DVD blanks aren't so expensive nowadays, why not back up to DVD?), or even less so to multiple CDs.) But for those of us with smaller devices that can play video, one needs a program to convert a DVD to a video that will play on the small device, and AutoGK is one program that can do this, among others.)

These use a much smaller resolution than for desktop video. My Pocket PC has a 320x240 ratio, my Smartphone 176x144. Also, these devices (except for these new PMPs) don't have much storage, so one wants to compress the video as small as possible.

I have done this by going to Advanced Options and setting the resolution width to that for my device, then manually setting either a file size or quality level, much lower than what one would use for a desktop video. (I have often set the quality level to 20-30.)

It would be nice though, if AGK had a couple of portable profiles to choose from. That would make it simpler, and usable for people who don't know how to make the settings I described above.

(You might wish to look at the portable profiles some other programs have, just to get some ideas--such as Windows Movie Maker (of course it creates WMV, rather than AVI, but has portable profiles), I believe Nero Digital, Pocket DIVX Encoder (http://divx.ppccool.com) (a freeware program specifically for creating pocket movies, but I don't think gets as good results as AGK), and others. See what the resolutions, bit rates, frame rates, etc., are on their profiles.) (You could try them out by playing with TCMCP on a PDA, if possible.)

Just a suggestion!
