That's certainly a "newb" question. There is no best way, per se; it's all dependent on many factors. The best anyone can do is tell you how they utilize their rips - I try to get three full length movies on one data DVD and maintain the original width. If, for example, you want to fit an entire movie to a CD, you'll need to reduce the aspect a great deal, which will sacrifice detail. As far as the best program, you'll get the best results from the full Gordian Knot (again, dependent on your settings). There are easier programs, but they don't produce the results you can get from Gordian Knot.
