I am trying to download music for my daughter and have been using musicmatch and lime wire to do it but when I successfully download music to a cd, the cd won't play on my daughter cd player. The cd player is a few years old but in good shape but the cd will play on my computer and dvd player and maybe in my car. it is a hit or miss with the cd. any suggestions. using tdk -r and tdk cdrw. thanks

It is not always illegal to download music. In my country it is allowed for example. And some music can be downloaded legaly from any country.

I dont exactly know how you have burned your music to the cd's and what kind of cd's you have used (-r/ -rw) . Could you give some info on that please?
If you would use nero (or an other burning program) and create an "audio cd" it should play fine on most (if not all) cd-players. And if its plays poorly, you might consider using other brand cd's, or switch from cd-r to -rw. Just burning wavs to the cd isnt enough. You have to select audio cd when burning.

I am using musicmatch to burn the audio cd's. I used nero already once to burn audio cd's and again it wouldn't work in my daughter's cd player. Now I burned a new audio cd, converting the files to wav instead mp3. now the new cd worked on the dvd player but failed to worked inthe truck. I am using Tdk cd-rw and tdk-r discs. any other suggestions would help to burn cd's to everything.

Burning the CD at low speed (8x) and enabling the Disc-At-Once option if you have this (ala Nero) will help a great deal with CD players which are a bit iffy with CDR's.

It's maybe only the player's fault. Some "old" equipment doesn't support CD-R very well (I 've got one) or doesn't support at all (I 've got one too).
If it's the case, you can try burning a CD-RW but there's few chances it works: CD-RW support is more rare than CD-R support.
defunkt's advice should be tried (even 4x if possible).

I found my daughters portable cd player and tried both audio cd's on them and both played on them. I couldn't believe it, not I have to figure out how to get them work in my truck. It is a great system. I reburned them to a mp3. I am a novice. what is the difference with a mp3 and wav file and how can they not play in cd player and which one is preferrable to the other?

To be simple:
On a Audio-CD, the music is stored in a "raw" way (there are no files, just tracks).
On a PC, the music is store in files. MP3 and WAV are sound files.
MP3 are compressed files, i.e. small size and with altered quality (depending on the compression that was used to create them).
WAV is (generally) uncompressed ones, i.e. big size and maximum quality (unless it was made from a MP3...).
You downloaded MP3s (since small files...). The software you use "convert" them while burning them to the Audio-CD format.
Maybe you're in another case (I may have misunderstood): there's the possibility of making a WAV/MP3-CD. That is: you directly copy files to a Data-CD. This requires specific players.
Classic CD-Player won't play MP3(data)-CD.

thanks for the help. it explains alot but still I convert the mp3 files to wav, they still won't play on the Classic cd player nor in my car or truck cd player which are pretty expensive cd players. one cd that I made plays in the truck. but I will keep on trying thanks again.

I don't know the software you use but I wonder why you have to do this. A 'normal' way to burn an audio-CD is:
MP3 file --> Audio-Tracks on the CD
You should not have to walk through this step. But maybe I'm fooling with myself and your software requires this.
If this goes on not working, you could try another burning software (Nero, or CDBurnerXP, which is free). Ask to create an audio CD, drag and drop your MP3s in the selection and burn...
