I just recently read Doom9's forum on DVD Shrink, so I downloaded the program and successfully burned my first CD. However, I suddenly have pop-ups and viruses all over my computer that my virus scans aren't removing. Can this be from DVD Shrink? If it is, is there anything I can do about it?

From where did you download the program?

DVD Shrink from reliable sources does not contain viruses nor spyware.

hi ariel_06 and welcome to the forum!

DVD Shrink is an amazing piece of freeware that comes highly recommended by many users. although i am not a frequent user, i have been keeping up with its development for a few years now, and this is the first time i have heard of any adware etc installed as a result of downloading shrink.

are you sure you did accidently pick up these viruses from alternate sources?

out of interest could you please tell us from where you downloaded the program?
(again, i must stress that i do not believe that the cause is through shrink, but could be an add-on from a malignant hoster).

there are many programs avaliable for removing spyware etc - adaware, spybot etc etc

good luck
j

This question hardly warrants the courtesy of a reply, however, I'll provide one anyway. DVD Shrink, provided it was downloaded from Doom9 or the official web site, does not have spyware or viruses included in it's code! Doom9 for years has been/is the definitive site for anyone with an interest in video and audio conversion. To suggest that they would risk their reputation by distributing software with spyware and viruses is downright rude. I suggest you first issue an apology to the good people who run Doom9, and then download a good spyware program, SpyBot comes mind, and run it on your computer.

This question hardly warrants the courtesy of a reply...Why certainly, it does. That's why it was posted in the Newbies Forum. :)

Obviously, a more experienced ripper would not have asked this question, so I'll assume that ariel is just getting a taste of our world for the first time. I don't possess any "standout" conversion moves even after doing them for a few years, now, but I remember the days when I had.....none.

Ariel--Make sure you have the latest AV definitions and run a full system scan, then download and install a good spyware program (free, easy to find) and scan your system with that to remove any malicious cookies, and finally, execute an uninstall/reinstall of Shrink. Download a fresh instance of Shrink if it will make you feel more comfortable. Still have problems, post back, either here, or in a new thread with tight, concise details on what you've done, and what the results were. You'll get help if you need it.

Go easy on me, everyone; a simple no would have been enough. Yes, I downloaded the software from doom9, but I know nothing about either it or doom9, so I had to make sure that I hadn't made a mistake. Thanks for all your help, but I've ran both AVG and Ad-aware and nothing is coming up, so I might have to have a specialist check it out. At least now I know that I won't have to find a new way to back up my movies....

I neglected to mention that if you're using IExplorer as your browser, you might want to check MS's critical updates and download and install anything specifically pointing to IE; IE has security loopholes that are constantly being exploited. On an off-topic note, download and install the latest Firefox browser and start playing with it, you'll find several things about it that you like better than IE, and it's always good to have options. At least twice in the past year, I've had issues with IE; it was quicker at the time to simply pull up Firefox with which to access my freemail accounts than it was to take the time to track down and fix the IE problem.

Running AVG Free, you can navigate straight to your DVD Shrink folder, right click, and select "Scan with AVG Free"; this will ease your mind about Shrink containing viruses, or malware, if the thought is still bothering you. Matter of fact, it's a good practice to get into to scan any executable file before installing it to your system.

Virus, you say? It's hard for any of us to comment on this without being able to look over your shoulder. More specific info is needed, but if your AV def's are current and AVG gives you a clean scan, then at some point, you either have to trust your software, or seek a different solution.

Ad-Aware reports no cookies or spyware? I find this unusual; I can't surf the net for five minutes without picking up cookies, you should have picked up several between scans, but maybe you don't do much surfing?

If you're getting error messages, give us the exact message, or post a screenshot so that we can better understand your problem.

If you've a friend that's tech-savvy, by all means call him in, but don't take your box to a shop just yet and spend any of that hard-earned cash. Save it for discs, new software, and hardware. Dig in and do some research on your problems, and chances are, you'll be saying to yourself after awhile, "Good grief, why didn't I see this sooner?!" ;)

Welcome to the forum ariel_06.
You're right I was hard on you and I extend an olive branch. You being a newbie I should exercised restraint. Doom9 is a great site and I encourage you to stick around for a while, learn from the masters, and share what you learn with a new crop of newbies. There's a wealth of information available in the various forum areas and the "search" button is your key to finding the answers. Good luck on cleansing you computer. :)
