Announcements during dvd playback

I'm trying to come up with some system for running a dvd, and occasionally have it paused/minimize then run a quick powerpoint slideshow, then start the movie again.

So far i'm using AutoIT and manually writing a script, which is a huge hassle dealing with timings, dvd menus, etc.

Wondering if anyone has other ideas for how I might go about doing this.
