While tuning the soundstorm ac3 volume and sound quality by comparing to the spdif passthrough using 48K dts(you know Bjorn_Lynne) , I became more forcused on the DRC setting in the AC3Filter in combination with the master gain to get the maximum volume with no distortion.
The DRC setting to +20dB and the master gain to -5dB gave the impression of the best quality through the analog surround a headphone and a digital receiver through the soundstorm ac3 encoding, in my case, without any theoretical background.
Also DRC enabled in VLC and Foobar2K made me feel identical to +20dB in the ac3Filter, still with no background knowledge.
The questions are :
. is the signal compressed by DRC reconstructrable by the receiver/decoder or just an one way modification utilizing the sound reproduction mechanism through the speaker/receiver?
. can the +20dB DRC & -5dB master gain produces + 15dB gain without any fidelity loss?
. does it have the album gain effect(same volume level between the music)?
. does it have anything to do with ac3 encoding time center level, sr level and dialog normalization?
. If the original sound is encoded with this mechanism, what is the difference between the play time DRC?
. what is the diffference between other players DRC(vlc, foobar2k, and external dvd players)
Any opinions or references would be heartfully welcomed. :)
