How beneficial is it really to do more than a 2 pass encode (with CCE SP)? Would I really notice a difference between a 2 pass encoded file vs. an 8 pass encoded file? Or is this mainly an issue for encoding at low bitrates?

8-pass is overkill - you can get away with 2.
make a test and compare an 8-pass with a 2-pass - bet you wont see any difference

Petermg, please don't take this the wrong way, I'm trying help. Asking a question like this is going to have the mods all over you. Use the "Search" button, this question has been asked, and answered, numerous times. Generally, more than two passes is considered overkill, however, there always exceptions that may benefit from an extra pass or two. Cheers. :D

It's odd how this figure seems to change, at one point I remember 5 was considered the maximum at which some extra benefit is derived, then it seemed to drop to 4.

to be honest,
2 passes = 58 bucks (CCE Basic)
more than 2 passes = 2000 bucks (CCE SP)

No way im going to pay thousand of bucks for a few pixel.

its all personal opinion, imo ;) i would say that >2 passes is a benefit but not enough for me for the time. i do 1 OPV + 1 pass. im happy with the output. more passes will help but its very small usually only testable with analyzers (psnr, etc) i would say if the bitrate is low enough and you have the time and want to do 8 passes even if the improvement is small, have at it. i just dont generally find it worth it.

from what have read 2 passes is more than enough for most stuff - although if its over 2 hours 30 mins i have been told 3 is ok - i use HC which only does 2 passes for most things now

From what I've experienced, the number of passes has more to do with sizing improvements than with quality improvements. Usually two passes will get me where I want to be, and only rarely does it takes more. I do not notice much in the way of quality increases with increases in number of passes.

the most passes I've ever used with cce sp is four passes. IMO I didn't see any differece between 2 passes and 4 passes
