file size problems with xvid

Using Gordian Knot, trying to encode 45 minute video from VOB to a 350mb file size, but no matter WHAT I DO, it comes out 416mb.

I've tried reinstalling the codecs, trying a newer version of virtualdub, resetting the default settings for the xvid codecs, checking and unchecking the 'recalculate bitrate if necessary' box, setting the bitrate as low as 800 even though the calc says it should be 950, using frame overhead, not using frame overhead, calculating the audio by bitrate and by file-size, re-processing the file with dvd2avi, renaming the files, deleting all the temp files, and finally banging my head off the screen repeatedly.

will someone please please please give me some advice on this?

I'm dying a little everytime it churns out yet another 416mb file.

Was there a solution to this problem i'm also having the same problem. out of 9 episodes from a dvd, 6 of them were fine. 3 of them came out bigger. Even when i unticked the re-adjust bitrate if required option.. 1 was 370mb, another was 400mb, and last was 500mb. In all of them the video bitrates had gone up from about 1036 to eg. 1500approx

You should expect the file to be bigger if you uncheck the re-adjust bitrate, as it needs to calculate the file by taking your setting and subtracting the audio file size.

It's a good idea to uninstall/reinstall your video codec (XviD/DivX) as installing a newer version over an old one can cause sizing problems.

I tried it ticked and unticked. i normally have it ticked and never had any prob. also haven't changed codecs or reinstalled anything for ages, like months. Also it was only 3 out of 9 that had a problem..

it's the first time i've ever had this problem and i encode a lot. the log shows that the video target size is about 314mb and then somehow it increases the bitrate by itself.. although nothing shows this, that is easy to read, could be there but in hex or something i can't understand

thats what I figure. I had to switch to divx 5 too. worked fine, but now half are xvid and half are divx. It doesn't make much difference, but I prefer the quality of xvid over divx, its a pity it won't work properly!

What I see with both logs is a lack of compressibility testing. Best practice is to use compressibility testing for both quality control and file size management:
