Handling PAL>NTSC converted video

Let's say I have an DVD containing video material that's been converted from PAL to NTSC, and I'd like to deinterlace it and make a backup with XviD or whatever. Would it make sense to convert it back to 50i first and if yes, how to do that?

The right process to use depends upon whether the conversion was done cleanly using pulldown flags, or less cleanly using hard pulldown or field blending.
