Could anyone tell me if there's a CLI tool which will take an AVS file and save it as an AVI with a specified compression format (say, XVID with everything at default) with sound? AFAIK avs2avi can't handle the sound; I had a try at using the VirtualDub(Mod) CLI to do this but something went wrong (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96763)... does anyone know of any other tools that would cope with this?

Have you tried Mencoder ? If I recall, you can feed it .AVS files directly these days. Since it has both A and V conversion capabilities, it seems like it would do the job.

Thank you for the suggestion... I had a go this morning but I'm finding it a little hard to make it work; would you happen to know what forums are best to ask questions about it (specifically the Windows version) on?
