My girlfriend has a handful of dance instruction dvds and she wanted to take clips and edit them in vegas into one long video and cut certain parts out. I ripped the dvd with dvd decryper. With the vob files I used autogk to turn it into an avi. Vegas didn't handle that file very well. I tried making it an uncompressed video with dub but the file turned became too large to fit onto my hard drive. Anyone have any other formats they recommend that maintain high quality, something a little more standard than divx or xvid.

Does Vegas edit mpeg-2? If so, you can edit the DVD-rip directly. If not, use something like AVS Video Converter to make it a usable format, or use Cuttermaran to directly edit the video.

If Vegas is supposed to edit MPEG-2 but it won't import the .vob files, first try renaming the extension to .mpg. If that doesn't work, seek out Vidomi. You can select all or a portion of the video, then under General Options check the "Ignore all settings and use MPEG copy code" and click Start. The output file will have all the attributes of an MPEG-2, and it's not re-rendered so there's no loss of quality.
